Australia to Recognise Palestinian State at UN General Assembly in September

In a landmark announcement, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that his government will officially recognise the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly this September, reported the Reuters.
“Today, I can confirm that at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September, Australia will recognise the state of Palestine,” Albanese declared at a press conference. “Australia will recognise the right of the Palestinian people to a state of their own.”
The recognition, he explained, is contingent on commitments made by the Palestinian Authority, with Canberra pledging to work alongside the international community to turn this recognition into a tangible reality.
Albanese emphasised that a two-state solution remains humanity’s “best hope” to end the ongoing cycle of violence in the Middle East, bring lasting peace, and alleviate the suffering and starvation in Gaza.
“When we recognise the long-held and legitimate aspirations of the people of Palestine, we are also upholding and strengthening our commitment to the people of Israel and their right to live in freedom, security, and safety,” he noted. “Until Palestinian statehood is permanent, peace can only be temporary.”
The move marks a significant diplomatic shift for Australia, placing it among a growing number of nations acknowledging Palestinian sovereignty amid the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
