Babloo Loitongbam, Executive Director of Human Rights Alert (HRA), has issued a statement following threats made against his family and false accusations levied by Meitei Leepun (ML), a local organization. The threats came after a press conference held by ML, during which the group accused Loitongbam of financial dealings with Kuki militant groups and misrepresented his involvement with a foreign national.
Loitongbam, a prominent human rights defender with over 30 years of experience, stated that on the morning of September 23, around fifty men came to his house and threatened his family, warning of severe consequences if he made any public appearances. Video clips of both the press conference and the visit to Loitongbam’s home have since gone viral on social media.
In response, Loitongbam refuted all allegations, stating that he has no financial transactions with any Kuki militant groups or individuals. He emphasized his long-standing advocacy for the peaceful coexistence of all communities in Manipur and his commitment to human rights, particularly the right of individuals facing persecution to seek asylum.
Loitongbam also addressed claims about his involvement with Mya Kyay Mon, a Norwegian national of Burmese-Buddhist origin. He clarified that she was referred to HRA as a woman in distress, and that the only charge against her was overstaying her visa. He denied any involvement in fundraising activities abroad, stressing that Mon remains in judicial custody in Imphal.
Finally, Loitongbam dismissed rumors of his involvement in an alleged Naga-Kuki-Meitei meeting aimed at framing the Meitei community for genocide. He called the claims “a figment of imagination” and reiterated his dedication to fostering peace and justice for all communities in Manipur.
