22 May 2024: In a gesture of solidarity and mourning, Bangladesh has declared Thursday, May 23, as a national day of mourning for the untimely demise of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
Following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of President Raisi and his entourage, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, Bangladesh joined several other nations, including Pakistan and India, in honoring the memory of the departed leaders.
As a mark of respect, all state and semi-state institutions, as well as educational establishments in Bangladesh, along with the nation’s diplomatic offices abroad, will lower their national flags to half-mast. This solemn gesture serves to express Bangladesh’s sympathy and solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran during this period of grief.
The tragic incident occurred when President Raisi and his delegation were returning from a ceremony to inaugurate a dam on Iran’s border with Azerbaijan. The helicopter crashed in Varzaqan, northwestern Iran, on May 19, leading to the loss of several prominent lives.
The announcement of a national day of mourning by Bangladesh underscores the deep sense of loss felt by the international community following the sudden and tragic demise of President Raisi and his companions. It reflects the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Bangladesh and Iran and reaffirms Bangladesh’s commitment to stand by Iran during this difficult time.
