New Delhi: The Bangladesh High Commission in the national capital marked the 55th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence with a high-profile reception that blended cultural celebration with subtle diplomatic signalling, drawing over 400 distinguished guests from across India’s political, diplomatic and cultural spectrum.
Hosted by Bangladesh High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah at Bangladesh House, the event was attended by Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment, Forest & Climate Change, who graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Among the prominent attendees were Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and senior journalist and former Union Minister M J Akbar, alongside diplomats, academics, civil society members, entrepreneurs and artists.
The evening opened with the national anthems of India and Bangladesh, performed live by visiting Bangladeshi musicians, setting a tone of shared history and bilateral goodwill. The venue was adorned with motifs inspired by traditional Bangladeshi Jamdani textiles and Sandesh sweets, reflecting the country’s rich cultural heritage.
A troupe of contemporary Bangladeshi artists — Nirob, Jalal, Mousumi, Pavel and Mithun — delivered a vibrant musical performance featuring folk and modern compositions, drawing enthusiastic applause from the audience. Guests were later treated to an array of authentic Bangladeshi cuisine, including the famed “Dhakai Kacchi,” prepared by a visiting team of chefs from Dhaka.
Earlier in the day, the celebrations began with the ceremonial hoisting of the national flag at the High Commission premises, marking the historic day of Bangladesh’s independence.
The event underscored not only the historical significance of Bangladesh’s liberation but also the growing depth of cultural and diplomatic engagement between the two neighbouring countries.
