Dhaka Summons Indian Envoy After Pre Poll Shooting Shakes Bangladesh

Dhaka: A shooting in central Dhaka has intensified political tension ahead of Bangladesh’s national elections and triggered a diplomatic response involving India. Sharif Osman Hadi, an independent election candidate, suffered a gunshot wound to the head during a campaign event in the Bijoynagar area. Three men on a motorcycle opened fire in broad daylight and fled. Doctors placed Hadi on life support. He remains in a coma.

The attack took place one day after the Election Commission announced the polling schedule, with voting set to begin on February 12. Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus described the incident as unacceptable during an election period. He directed security agencies to identify and arrest those involved through a fast and thorough investigation.

Soon after, Bangladesh summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma. The foreign ministry urged cooperation to prevent suspects from escaping across borders and demanded action if any entered Indian territory. Officials cited online claims linking an alleged attacker to India. Police later clarified they found no verified evidence of cross border movement.

During the meeting, Dhaka also raised objections over public statements by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. Authorities accused her remarks of encouraging unrest and repeated demands for her extradition. Hasina fled to India after mass protests led to the fall of her government in August 2024. A tribunal later sentenced her to death in a war crimes case, a verdict she rejected.

India responded by rejecting accusations of involvement. New Delhi reiterated support for free and inclusive elections and urged Dhaka to maintain internal law and order.

The shooting reflects a tense political climate. Security failures now threaten voter confidence. Authorities face pressure to ensure safety for candidates and citizens during the election process.
