Bangladesh SCBA Calls on India to Arrest Former PM Sheikh Hasina and Sister

August 07, 2024: In a dramatic turn of events, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) of Bangladesh has made a formal request to India to apprehend former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana, reported the Times of India. The appeal, led by SCBA President AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, calls for the immediate arrest and extradition of the two sisters to Bangladesh. Khokon emphasized the need for India to assist in maintaining justice and accountability.

“We want to maintain a good relationship with the people of India. Please, arrest Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, who fled the country, and send them back to Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina has killed many people in Bangladesh,” Khokon stated. His remarks underscore the serious allegations against Hasina, who has faced mass apprising and accusations of human rights abuses during her tenure.

The call for action comes amidst significant political upheaval in Bangladesh. Following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, there has been a surge in support for Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus to lead an interim government. Yunus, a highly respected figure both domestically and internationally, has agreed to serve as an adviser to the interim government while he completes a minor medical procedure in Paris.

The situation in Bangladesh has drawn widespread attention, with key student protestors advocating for Yunus’s leadership as a means to stabilize the country and ensure a peaceful transition of power. The push for his leadership highlights the growing discontent with Hasina’s government and the desire for reform and accountability.

The political crisis in Bangladesh has significant implications for regional stability and international relations. India’s response to the SCBA’s request will be closely watched as it could influence the future dynamics between the two neighboring countries.
