Main Accused in Baruipur Child Murder Case Killed in Police Encounter

Kolkata: The main accused in the murder of an 11-year-old girl in West Bengal’s Baruipur was killed during a police encounter while officers were conducting a crime scene reconstruction, according to police.

Police said the investigating team left Baruipur Police Station around 12.45 am with the accused, Prabhas Mondal, and travelled to Surjyapur, where the child’s body had been recovered. According to the police account, the accused allegedly snatched a firearm from an officer, fired a shot and attempted to escape during the reconstruction process.

Officers responded by opening fire in self defence, police said. The accused sustained injuries and was taken to Baruipur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The child had been reported missing on July 4. Her body was recovered the following day from the Surjyapur Haat area. The incident led to protests in the area, with residents blocking roads and damaging public property while demanding swift action against those responsible.

Police also reported that one person died in mob violence after being suspected of involvement in the case. State authorities later said the deceased individual was innocent.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said he had directed the Director General of Police to submit a report on the case within 72 hours. He said action would follow if any negligence was found during the investigation. He also said authorities had identified around 200 people for alleged vandalism during the protests.

Police have arrested three people in connection with the case. A six member Special Investigation Team has been formed to carry out a detailed investigation into the incident.
