B’desh Students Protests: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigns, interim govt to run the country, Army Chief says

5 August 2024: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left the country, local media reports say. A personal aide to Hasina told Al Jazeera that the prime minister fled the country in an army helicopter.

“She and her sister have left Ganabhaban (the premier’s official residence) for a safer place,” a senior advisor to the Bangladesh prime minister said on condition of anonymity.

Earlier, an AFP report citing the senior advisor said that the embattled leader’s resignation was a “possibility” after being questioned about the likelihood of her stepping down. “The situation is such that this is a possibility, but I don’t know how it will happen,” the aide said.

Army chief said he had met political leaders and told them the Army would take over responsibility for law and order.

“I’m taking all responsibility (of the country). Please cooperate,” he said in a televised address.

“Representatives of main political parties were present in discussion with Army. Request students to stay calm and go back home,” Bangladesh Army Chief said.
