Voter Roll Errors Raise Concerns as Bengaluru Residents Flag Missing and Mismatched Records

New Delhi: Confusion and concern have emerged in Bengaluru as voters report errors during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision exercise of electoral rolls. Several residents have received notices grouping multiple individuals under a single identity, raising questions about accuracy and transparency.

In one case, a voter was asked to verify her details under a list containing 103 entries of women named Nagalakshmi, all recorded as wives of men named Manjunath. The notice grouped these entries together despite photographs showing different individuals. Authorities asked the recipient to identify her correct record without explaining how the remaining entries would be treated.

Officials said the issue has affected many residents as the mapping process progresses. Data shows that over 73.57 percent of electors in Bengaluru Urban, covering more than 29.49 lakh voters, have been mapped so far. However, many voters reported receiving notices after deadlines had passed.

Booth Level Officers noted that the issue appears more common among marginalised communities. Naming patterns, including single names or shared family names, have led to multiple entries being clustered together. Officers added that voters often receive no clear explanation when discrepancies arise.

Other complaints involve voters whose names have disappeared from records. Some individuals with valid voter ID cards and long voting histories have been marked as “record not found.” In certain cases, entering an EPIC number shows a different name.

Domestic workers Selvi and Anitha are among those affected. Despite holding valid documents, their names were missing from recent rolls. Language differences and migration between cities have added to verification challenges.

The situation has raised concerns about inclusion and access as the revision process continues.
