Patna:has taken serious note of the suspicious death of an undertrial prisoner Md. Irshad Alam (55 years), who was in judicial custody in the Barauli police station area of Gopalganj district. It has demanded a high-level inquiry. The Commission has issued a letter to the Director General of Police (DGP), Bihar, directing prompt action in this matter. He was accused of having two passports, though the family members claim that one passport was already surrendered.
The letter issued by the Commission states that, according to videos viral on social media and allegations made by the family members, Md. Irshad Alam, a resident of Balaha village under the Barauli police station area, was called to the police station on June 2, 2026. It is alleged that money was demanded from him at the police station, and when he refused, he was tortured. Later, on June 4, he was sent to judicial custody.
It is further alleged that he was subjected to mental and physical torture during custody,
causing his health to deteriorate at midnight on June 9. He was rushed to the Sadar Hospital in Gopalganj, where doctors declared him dead. The family members claim that the death had already occurred inside the police station and he was brought to the hospital merely to cover up the matter.
The Commission also mentioned in its letter that the concerned Station House Officer (SHO) has previously faced allegations of misconduct, extortion, and the use of abusive language, which goes against the police code of conduct.
Given the gravity of the matter, the Commission has recommended the formation of a high-
level inquiry team for an impartial investigation, strict action against the guilty police officers, and the immediate transfer of the Barauli SHO until the probe is completed.
The Commission has also directed the concerned officials to report back on the action taken
within one week.
