Bhopal: Ahead of the Navratri festival, BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma has demanded the closure of meat shops across Madhya Pradesh, claiming that it would be a mark of respect for Hindu sentiments. His statement has triggered widespread debate and strong reactions from various quarters, reported the New Indian Express.
Sharma argued that those who advocate for communal harmony should reciprocate by honoring Hindu traditions. “Those who speak of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb should now respect Hindu faith. No one will starve if we avoid meat for a few days. Hindus must be honored for the sake of Hindu-Muslim unity,” he asserted.
The opposition Congress party has strongly opposed the demand, stating that such a move would severely impact meat traders who rely on their business for livelihood. The party insisted that the government should compensate affected traders for the nine days of lost earnings if such a ban is enforced.
Critics and activists have raised concerns over what they perceive as discriminatory practices targeting Muslims. They questioned why restrictions are imposed on meat shops during Hindu festivals, while similar considerations are not extended during Islamic observances.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that stringent laws have been implemented in some parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Sambhal and Meerut. Authorities have warned that offering prayers on roads could lead to criminal charges, including the cancellation of passports and licenses.
The demand for shutting down meat shops during Hindu festivals has been a recurring issue, often sparking communal tensions. While proponents argue it is a matter of religious sensitivity, opponents view it as an infringement on livelihood and religious freedom.
