BJP MLA Seeks Renaming of Ghazipur to ‘Gautam Nagar,’ Sparking Heritage Debate

Ghazipur: A BJP MLA from Uttar Pradesh has stirred controversy by proposing the renaming of Ghazipur district to “Gautam Nagar” in an effort to honor Maharishi Gautam, a revered Hindu sage. Ketakee Singh, representing Bansdih, urged the state and central governments to replace place names linked to historical invaders with those that celebrate indigenous cultural and spiritual heritage.

Singh argued that renaming the city would help youths reconnect with India’s ancient roots and feel pride in their heritage. She criticized the current name for paying homage to Saiyyad Masood Ghazi, the 14th-century founder of Ghazipur, whom she portrayed as an invader. Singh further contended that the glorification of rulers like Akbar, despite the suffering they caused, has distorted historical narratives.

The suggestion has reignited conversations about how place names reflect collective identity and history—and whose stories are being elevated or erased. Supporters of the proposal argue that reclaiming names tied to native sage kings and spiritual leaders can foster unity rooted in pre-colonial identity. Detractors warn that revising Ghazipur’s name could marginalize the region’s Muslim heritage and strain communal harmony, given its long-standing historical association with Ghazi and shared syncretic traditions.

The debate underscores India’s ongoing struggle to balance heritage, religious identity, and collective memory. Whether the proposal gains institutional approval remains to be seen, but it is already reshaping conversations about cultural recognition and the politics of naming.
