In a statement that has sparked outrage and concern, BJP Member of Parliament Sakshi Maharaj recently urged Hindus to keep weapons at home, claiming that God does not protect the weak. Speaking at a public gathering, he said, “Every Hindu must keep a weapon. A sword or a licensed gun – anything – because those who cannot protect themselves should not expect God to help them.”, reported the Madhyamam.
The MP’s remarks, widely circulated on social media, are being criticized as provocative and potentially dangerous in a country where communal tensions already run high. Civil rights activists, opposition leaders, and members of the public have expressed alarm, stating that such statements from a sitting parliamentarian could incite violence and deepen divides between communities.
Sakshi Maharaj, known for his controversial speeches, has made similar remarks in the past. His recent comments are being seen as part of a larger pattern of inflammatory rhetoric that critics say threatens India’s secular fabric and rule of law.
Legal experts have pointed out that encouraging citizens to arm themselves can undermine the authority of the police and judiciary, leading to vigilantism and possible escalation of violence.
Despite the backlash, no formal action has yet been taken against the MP.
