BJP Revives Old Claims to Stoke Communal Divide Ahead of Elections

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Muslim League of orchestrating two attacks on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in 1939, alleging that the Congress hid these incidents for decades. The remarks, coming ahead of key state elections, are being viewed by critics as part of the party’s ongoing attempt to communalize historical narratives for political gain.

In its statement, the BJP claimed that Muslim League-backed groups attacked Patel’s procession in Vadodara and Bhavnagar before Independence. The party said the Congress had remained silent at the time and later erased the episode from textbooks. It also cited historian Rizwan Kadri as the source for its assertions.

Political analysts and opposition leaders have questioned the timing and intent behind the BJP’s remarks. They argue that the party often invokes selective interpretations of history to target India’s Muslim community and divert attention from present-day issues such as unemployment, inflation, and governance failures.

Muslim leaders have condemned the statement as an attempt to vilify an entire community by linking them to events from the pre-independence era. They said such rhetoric undermines national unity and distracts from the inclusive values championed by India’s freedom fighters, including Sardar Patel himself, who advocated for communal harmony.

The BJP’s comments come amid growing criticism of its polarizing political strategy, which continues to deepen religious fault lines in the country.
