Blasphemous Post Sparks Tension in Dehradun

Dehradun: The city witnessed heightened tension after an objectionable social media post allegedly targeting Prophet Mohammed ﷺ went viral, triggering massive outrage among members of the Muslim community. The accused, identified as Sandeep Rathore, is believed to have made derogatory remarks online, prompting a strong backlash and demands for immediate legal action, reported the New Indian Express.
The incident came to light on Wednesday night when hundreds gathered at the ISBT police outpost, staging a protest and calling for the arrest of Rathore. The atmosphere grew tense as the crowd expressed their anger over the alleged blasphemous content.
Dehradun Police acted swiftly, registering a case under hate speech laws. SP City Pramod Kumar confirmed that Rathore is a resident of the Selakui area and that he is accused of posting inflammatory content against the Prophet ﷺ. “The FIR has been registered and raids are ongoing to apprehend the accused,” he stated.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have placed the area under high alert and deployed additional forces to prevent any untoward incidents. The Intelligence Bureau and local intelligence units are monitoring the situation closely to ensure communal harmony is maintained.
Police also assured protestors that strict action would be taken, which helped calm the situation temporarily. The FIR was formally lodged at the Patel Nagar police station, and efforts to locate the accused are continuing.
The objectionable post has caused widespread resentment, especially among the Muslim community, sparking fears of potential unrest. Officials have appealed to the public to maintain peace and avoid sharing inflammatory content online.
