Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has pledged to revoke any law in Bangladesh that contradicts the Quran and Sunnah. He said no future legislation will move against Islamic principles if the BNP returns to office. He made these remarks at the National Conference of the Combined Imam Khatib Council at the Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Center in Sher e Bangla Nagar.
Salahuddin said former President Ziaur Rahman introduced the principle of absolute trust and faith in Almighty Allah into the state framework. He said the Awami League later removed this from the constitution. He stated that the BNP plans to restore it and reaffirm the country’s Islamic identity through state policy. He added that the party follows the ideals of the Medina Charter and seeks to reduce sectarian tensions in communities.
He called on imams and khatibs to maintain discipline in mosques. He urged them to prevent disputes and restrict activities that fall outside religious practice. The event was chaired by Mufti Muhibullahil Baqi Nadvi, senior pesh imam of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and convener of the council. Religious scholars and imams from different regions also addressed the conference. They discussed unity, responsible leadership and the role of mosques in social stability.
Salahuddin said national harmony depends on a legal structure aligned with Islamic teachings. He added that the BNP wants laws that reflect the values of the people and respect the country’s religious commitments.
