Tensions surged in Barkhandi village of Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district on May 23 when a man disguised in a burqa was apprehended while attempting to enter a local temple, igniting communal unease across the region.
The man was later identified as Sunil, a resident of Yamunanagar, Haryana, who was reportedly visiting relatives nearby. The incident occurred near the Veeron Wale Mandir, where locals grew suspicious after observing the person’s gait and behavior, which did not resemble that of a woman, reported the Clarion India.
According to eyewitnesses, villagers approached the individual for questioning, prompting him to flee into the temple premises. He was soon caught, and upon forcibly removing the veil, it was revealed he was a man. The situation escalated quickly, with some in the crowd reportedly assaulting him before he managed to escape.
A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, has further fueled public speculation and concern over the man’s intentions.
“It was disturbing to witness someone disguised in a burqa entering a place of worship. Temples are sacred, and their sanctity must be preserved,” said one local resident. Many community members have demanded clarity and swift action from authorities.
Shamli police confirmed that an FIR has been filed following complaints from the public. Given the sensitive nature of the case, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has also stepped in to investigate. Officials have urged citizens not to spread rumors or misinformation.
“We are approaching this case with full seriousness. The public should remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without disruption,” a senior police official stated.
The incident has sparked conversations around religious sensitivity and communal harmony. Residents of Barkhandi have appealed for timely and transparent updates from authorities to prevent further unrest and ensure peace.
