Catastrophic Landslides in Wayanad: Death Toll Crosses 250

1 Aug. 2024: In the early hours of July 30, Wayanad district in Kerala was devastated by a series of landslides triggered by relentless heavy rains. The initial landslide, which occurred around 3 am in the Mundakkai estates area, set off a chain reaction with subsequent landslides engulfing Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha. The death toll has tragically risen to 256, with rescue operations hampered by challenging conditions, multiple reports said.

The aftermath presents a grim scene: collapsed roads, a washed-away vital bridge, and vehicles swept away by floodwaters. Haunting sights of body parts and infant remains floating in the floodwaters have emerged.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reported that 45 relief camps have been established, housing approximately 3,069 displaced individuals. Out of the deceased, 34 bodies have been identified, with 18 returned to their families. Additionally, 16 bodies were recovered from the Chaliyar River near Pothukal village.

Rescue efforts, bolstered by the Army and four National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, face significant obstacles. A vital bridge’s loss initially delayed rescue operations, but an iron bridge constructed by the Army has expedited relief efforts. Local agencies, including state police and fire services, are working closely with the Army and NDRF to ensure a comprehensive response.

Medical facilities have been enhanced, with additional staff and supplies being deployed to Wayanad. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has approved Rs 5 crore in immediate assistance and dispatched a team to aid relief efforts. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah also expressed support and solidarity with the affected families.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts in Kerala, predicting extremely heavy rainfall. This could lead to further flash floods and landslides, prompting authorities and the public to exercise extreme caution.
