Kolkata, Sep 3: After 16 days of relentless questioning, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested Sandip Ghosh, former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Ghosh’s arrest comes amidst two parallel probes being conducted by the CBI – one concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the hospital and the other related to allegations of financial irregularities during his tenure, reported The Indian Express.
The tragic incident occurred on August 9 when the junior doctor was found raped and murdered in the seminar hall of the state-run institute while Ghosh was in charge. The horrifying discovery triggered widespread outrage within the medical community, with some suggesting that the victim might have uncovered disturbing secrets related to the hospital’s management under Ghosh’s leadership.
Following a directive from the Calcutta High Court on August 14, the CBI took over the investigation from the Kolkata Police. Ghosh has been under daily interrogation since then, with his arrest on Monday, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigations.
On the day of his arrest, Ghosh was initially questioned at the CBI’s special crime unit office in Salt Lake, Kolkata, which is handling the probe into the junior doctor’s murder. Later, he was taken to the CBI’s Nizam Palace office, where the agency’s economic offences wing is investigating the financial irregularities at R.G. Kar Medical College.
It remains unclear whether Ghosh’s arrest is directly linked to the junior doctor’s murder or the financial misconduct allegations. However, sources close to the investigation indicated that the sequence of events leading to his arrest strongly suggests a connection to the financial irregularities case.
The former principal has been a figure of controversy since the day the junior doctor’s body was discovered, and his arrest marks a crucial step in the investigation.
