CBI Challenges Bail for Kuldeep Sengar as Protests Demand Justice for Unnao Survivor

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation has approached the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court order granting conditional bail to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case. Officials said the agency filed a special leave petition after examining the December 23 order which suspended Sengar’s sentence during appeal proceedings.

Despite the bail order, Sengar remains in prison due to a separate conviction. He is serving a 10 year sentence in another CBI case linked to murder, according to officials familiar with the matter.

Public anger over the bail decision continued to surface outside the Delhi High Court. Several women staged peaceful protests holding placards demanding swift justice for the survivor. Messages on placards stressed urgency in delivering justice and expressed solidarity with the survivor from Unnao. Protesters raised slogans intermittently while remaining seated outside the court complex.

Delhi Police later asked the protesters to leave the premises, warning of legal action if the gathering continued.

Mehmood Pracha, counsel for the survivor, said legal steps toward the Supreme Court were underway irrespective of the CBI move. He said his team planned to file complaints against officials accused of aiding Sengar. Pracha warned the order sent a damaging signal regarding safety and justice for women across the country and urged public action to protect women’s rights.
