Chaos Erupts as Bomb Hits Sadar Mosque in Odisha Amidst Rising Hate Crimes

Sambalpur, Odisha, March 28: Chaos unfolded at Sadar Mosque in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Tuesday evening, following a bomb attack that targeted worshippers exiting the mosque after evening prayers. The bomb, concealed within a box bearing the Instagram handle ‘sbp mafiya gang,’ was reportedly hurled from a flyover, striking individuals and a motorcycle outside the mosque.

Eyewitnesses described the harrowing event, recounting how the bomb landed in the mosque’s courtyard, causing panic and injuries. According to reports, two young Muslim boys sustained severe injuries in the attack, contradicting initial police statements that indicated only minor injuries.

Sambalpur Superintendent of Police, Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo, assured the public that the injured individuals were in stable condition and that law enforcement agencies were swiftly investigating the incident. Police officials, including Himansu Lal, IG of the northern range, and SP Mukesh Bhamoo, arrived promptly at the scene to initiate an investigation into the matter.

Authorities have sealed off the area surrounding Pirbaba Chowk, which falls under the jurisdiction of Sambalpur Town Police Station, and are conducting thorough security checks at all entry and exit points within the city.

Amidst the aftermath of the attack, political tensions have escalated, with Congress leader Asaf Ali Khan suggesting that the incident may be a ploy by the BJP and the BJD to stoke local tensions. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is the ruling party in the region, led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

The attack on Sadar Mosque comes amidst a surge in hate crimes targeting Muslims across India. Reports of assaults and harassment during Holi celebrations have emerged from various parts of the country, further exacerbating communal tensions. Incidents of mosque vandalism and defacement have also been reported, with instances documented in Maharashtra, including Beed and Mumbai’s Thane area.

As investigations into the Sadar Mosque bombing continue, concerns mount over the escalating wave of hate crimes and communal violence plaguing the nation. Authorities are under pressure to address these challenges effectively and ensure the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their religious or cultural affiliations.
