New Delhi: The Congress has raised concern over claims from China regarding mediation between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. Party leaders said the issue demands a clear response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi due to its implications for national security.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said Chinese statements about mediating India Pakistan tensions conflict with official Indian positions. He noted similar claims earlier made by former United States President Donald Trump, who repeatedly stated he intervened to stop Operation Sindoor on May 10, 2025. Ramesh said the Prime Minister remained silent despite these public assertions made across several international forums.
Ramesh pointed to a July 4, 2025 statement by Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Rahul Singh. The officer said India faced and countered China during Operation Sindoor. Ramesh said Chinese mediation claims raise questions since China stood aligned with Pakistan during the conflict.
The Congress leader said the issue links closely with India China relations. He criticised recent re engagement efforts, stating talks progressed on Chinese terms. He referred to remarks made by the Prime Minister in June 2020, saying those comments weakened India’s negotiating position. He also highlighted a record trade deficit with China and said Indian exports rely heavily on Chinese imports.
Ramesh flagged continued Chinese actions related to Arunachal Pradesh. He said these actions occur amid a strained and hostile bilateral relationship. Under such conditions, he said, people deserve clarity on China’s role in the sudden halt of Operation Sindoor.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently listed India Pakistan tensions among disputes mediated by China during the year. The Indian government has maintained the May 7 to May 10 conflict ended through direct talks between the two countries’ military leadership. India has also reiterated its rejection of third party involvement in bilateral matters.
