Cinematic Integrity Under Fire: Addressing Propaganda in Film

The movie “Humare Barah,” set to be released on June 7th, has sparked significant controversy from the moment its trailer was unveiled. It is evident that this film is a propaganda piece targeting a specific community. The dialogues and theme revolve around the beliefs of the Muslim community, with verses from the Quran being twisted and falsely presented.

A particularly egregious misinterpretation in the movie claims that women, during menstruation, have no right to refuse their husband’s physical desires. This is a blatant distortion of what the Quran actually states. Surah Baqarah, verse 232, clarifies: “They ask you about menstruation. Say: ‘It is a state of impurity; so keep away from women in the state of menstruation, and do not approach them until they are cleansed. And when they are cleansed, then come to them as Allah has commanded you. Truly, Allah loves those who abstain from evil and keep themselves pure.”

The Quran directs men to abstain from approaching women during menstruation, but this does not imply that people should avoid sitting together or eating together when a woman is menstruating. The explanation of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ clarifies that during this period, men are only required to abstain from sexual intercourse; there is no change in other aspects of relationships, and the woman should be treated normally. This clearly highlights the distortion of truth depicted in cinema under the guise of entertainment.

Islam is often misrepresented as portraying women as being under the control of men, but in reality, it respects women as dignified individuals. Islam grants women numerous rights, including financial rights, such as the mahr (dowry), which ensures that the wife receives a specified amount from her husband, highlighting her financial independence and value within the marriage. “And give to the women (whom you marry) their Mahr (obligatory bridal-money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) with a good heart.” [Chapter al-Nisa 4: verse 4]

Furthermore, Islam emphasizes that the bond between spouses should be defined by peace, affection, and compassion. Chapter 30, Verse 21 of the Quran states, “And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.”

In Islam, both partners in marriage are called to cultivate peace, love, and mercy. They are encouraged to support and bring solace to one another, prioritize each other’s happiness, and avoid causing harm, whether physical or emotional. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “…The best of you are those who are the best to their wives.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1162]

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ led by example, inspiring men to strive for excellence. He taught that household chores are fundamental life skills, not bound by gender, by actively assisting his wives. His teachings remind us that while women often bear the burden of household tasks, such responsibilities are not solely for women but for all to share. Moreover, he valued his family’s perspective, frequently seeking advice from his wife and respecting her opinions when facing important decisions.

Allah has repeatedly commanded men to treat their wives with honor, dignity, and respect. Yet, despite these divine teachings, some individuals propagate falsehoods and spread misconceptions about Islam, particularly through entertainment media. Cinemas are meant to entertain, not to target communities and distort their faith. It is unacceptable that the last divine book for humanity is being misinterpreted and portrayed negatively.

There should be no tolerance for propaganda movies that promote hate and spread false ideologies. It is imperative to address this issue and take decisive action to put an end to such harmful productions. We must stand firm and express our outrage, sending a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated in the future. It’s essential to advocate for accurate representation and respect for all religions and beliefs.
