Nagamangala: Tensions ran high in Nagamangala, situated between Mysuru and Mandya, when a Ganesh immersion procession turned violent. The clashes erupted near a mosque and dargah during the procession, reportedly triggered by an incident of stone-pelting. As the procession passed by the religious sites, miscreants allegedly hurled stones, which quickly escalated into chaos, with groups engaging in violent confrontations.
The unrest soon spread to nearby areas, with several local shops being set on fire. Eyewitnesses claimed that rioters also broke into homes, causing panic and fear among the residents. The police responded swiftly, conducting raids and arresting 58 individuals suspected of being involved in the disturbances.
In the aftermath of the violence, a delegation of Muslim leaders, comprising representatives from Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, and the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR), visited the area to assess the situation. The delegation examined the damage caused to properties, particularly the businesses and homes affected during the clashes. They expressed concerns over the extent of the destruction and the impact on the local community.
The delegation raised serious allegations against the police, accusing them of abusing their authority during the arrests and detentions. They claimed that many innocent individuals had been wrongfully taken into custody and demanded their immediate release. The group met with the Superintendent of Police (SP), urging him to ensure that the innocent are freed and that peace is restored in the region. They also emphasized the importance of maintaining communal harmony and called on the police to handle the situation impartially and ensure that justice is served.
In the wake of the violence, the district administration has imposed restrictions in certain areas to prevent further escalation, and additional police forces have been deployed to maintain law and order. The authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident and have assured the public that those responsible for the violence will face strict action.
Community leaders from both sides have appealed for calm, urging people to refrain from spreading rumors and inciting further unrest. Efforts are being made to mediate between the groups involved and ensure that communal harmony is preserved. The situation remains tense but under control, with security forces keeping a close watch on the developments.
