The trigger for the violence was an interfaith relationship between a young man and a minor girl from Badaun, Uttar Pradesh. The girl had reportedly come to Dehradun to meet the man, which caught the attention of locals. As news of the couple’s presence spread, members from both Hindu and Muslim communities gathered at the railway station. What began as a confrontation quickly turned violent, with both sides hurling objects at each other, damaging trains that were parked at the station.
