Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Islamic Federation, which consists of all Jamaats, Islamic movements, and political parties, organised a massive rally and protest with thousands of people demanding the repeal of the Waqf Amendment Act 2025. The protest march started from Aathupalam and proceeded to Ukkadam on Friday.
The Coimbatore District Islamic Federation has been actively involved in various constructive efforts for the welfare of the community. These include campaigns to protect the rights of Muslims, public meetings, initiatives for social and religious harmony, human rights advocacy, awareness campaigns against social evils, and educational efforts.
With an underlying motive to seize and destroy Waqf properties belonging to the Muslim community, the BJP-led Union government has introduced the Waqf Amendment Act, ignoring thousands of objections submitted to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), as well as the opposition from democratic forces in Parliament and especially disregarding the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
Chants like “Do not seize Waqf properties!”, “Do not destroy India’s diversity!”, and “Union Government, Withdraw the Waqf Amendment Act!” echoed throughout the rally as thousands marched from Aathupalam to Ukkadam.
In front of Valliammai Bakery in Ukkadam, the crowd gathered and raised slogans against the Waqf Amendment Act. Following this, Mr. Kayal Mehabub, State Secretary of the Indian Union Muslim League, delivered a strong condemnation speech. He was followed by Maulana Sadeethuddin Baqavi and Mr. Noor Mohammed, former State General Secretary of the JAQH organisation, who also delivered speeches condemning the Act.
The protest was held under the leadership of Alhaj Inayathullah, Coordinator of the Coimbatore District Islamic Federation, with Mr. Sultan Ameer presiding, and the protest was coordinated by Mr. Sabir Ali.
Thousands and thousands of people participated in this protest and expressed their strong opposition to the Waqf Act through the following resolutions:
- We express our gratitude to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M.K. Stalin, and to the DMK Members of Parliament and Legislative Assembly for their continued opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill since its introduction and for passing a resolution against it in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
- We commend all democratic forces and political parties across India who have raised their voices against the Waqf Amendment Act and who continue to fight for social justice and the rights of minorities, on behalf of the Islamic community.
- Just as the Tamil Nadu government has declared that the new education policy and CAA-NRC will not be implemented in the state, we urge the Chief Minister to announce that the Waqf Amendment Act too will not be enforced in Tamil Nadu.
- We strongly condemn the Union BJP-led government for enforcing the Waqf Amendment Act overnight, disregarding the recommendations submitted to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and ignoring the nationwide opposition from democratic forces. We also urge the Union Government to immediately withdraw the Act.
These four resolutions were unanimously passed. Leaders, administrators, and scholars from the Coimbatore District Islamic Federation participated and expressed their strong opposition. Leaders from social justice organisations, political parties, Tamil nationalist groups, secular democratic forces, and human rights activists also joined the protest and voiced their dissent.
