14 May 2024: In a surprising turn of events, comedian Shyam Rangeela has alleged obstruction in his attempt to file nomination papers to contest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Varanasi constituency for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections. Despite multiple efforts since May 10, Rangeela claims he was barred from entering the district magistrate’s office on the day PM Modi filed his nomination.
Rangeela, known for his humorous acts and mimicry, expressed his determination to challenge PM Modi, citing widespread support he claims to have received from the people of Varanasi. He emphasized that his decision to contest is not for fame but stems from a genuine desire to participate in the democratic process.
The incident has sparked controversy, with the Congress party also weighing in on the matter. Congress leader Surendra Rajput criticized the alleged administrative hindrance, questioning the fairness of the electoral process. Rajput highlighted the importance of allowing all eligible candidates, including PM Modi’s challengers, to file their nominations without impediment.
PM Modi, seeking a third consecutive term from Varanasi, has previously secured significant victories with substantial margins. However, Rangeela’s attempt to enter the political arena adds an intriguing dimension to the electoral landscape, given his popularity and vocal criticism of the Prime Minister’s policies.
As of now, 14 individuals, including candidates from mainstream political parties and independents, have filed their nominations for the Varanasi constituency. Among them are Congress candidate Ajai Rai and Bahujan Samajwadi Party’s Athar Ali Lari. Despite the challenges faced by Rangeela, his bid for candidacy adds an element of unpredictability to the electoral dynamics in Varanasi.
