Communal Clashes During Holi in Jharkhand’s Giridih, Shops and Vehicles Set on Fire

-Zaina Aman
A Holi procession in Ghodthamba, Giridih, turned violent on Friday, leading to clashes. Several people were injured, and multiple shops and vehicles were torched.
The violence erupted when locals opposed the procession due to past incidents of disorderly behavior and slogans. Tensions rose as organizers insisted on passing through Mosque Street at Ghodthamba Chowk. A heated argument quickly escalated into violence.
Eyewitnesses said some Holi revellers turned aggressive, damaging property and setting fires. Panic spread as shops and vehicles burned.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Bimal Kumar, Deputy Development Commissioner (DDC) Smita Kumari, and SDPO Rajendra Prasad arrived with police forces to control the situation. Despite intervention, arson continued.
The clashes lasted an hour before reinforcements dispersed the rioters. SP Bimal Kumar confirmed the incident, stating, “Clashes broke out in the Ghodthamba OP constituency. Those responsible will face strict action. The situation is now stable, with no major injuries reported.”
Meanwhile, disturbing reports emerged. Md Amjad, an auto driver from Dhanwar, alleged he was forced to chant “Jai Shri Ram” and assaulted. He claimed his attackers checked his religious identity, while his two Dalit friends remained unharmed.
Authorities have launched a probe to identify the culprits. Security has been tightened to prevent further unrest.
