Balasore, Odisha, June 19: Tensions flared in the coastal town of Balasore, Odisha, resulting in a curfew and internet suspension on Tuesday morning. The unrest began on Monday in the Patrapada area, following allegations of cow slaughter during Eid al-Adha celebrations, according to police reports.
Residents claimed to have seen red water in the drains, allegedly from animal blood, sparking confrontations between two communities. The ensuing violence involved stone pelting, which left at least 15 people injured, including five police officers. In response, the district administration enforced Section 144 of the CrPC to restore order.
On Monday night, the situation escalated as members of one community attacked homes and properties in the Golapokhari, Motiganj, and Cinema Chhak areas. The violence involved hurling stones, sticks, and glass bottles, resulting in significant property damage and fires. Law enforcement resorted to firing warning shots to disperse the mobs.
Balasore SP Sagarika Nath stated, “We have imposed a curfew in Balasore municipality areas and shut down internet services in communally sensitive areas to prevent further clashes. We are appealing to people not to leave their homes. Strict action will be taken against those responsible for the violence.”
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has directed the district collector to take all necessary measures to restore peace and order. Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi and Sadar MLA Manas Kumar Dutt have urged both communities to maintain calm and uphold peace.
This incident echoes a similar situation in April 2017, when the town of Bhadrak in Odisha experienced communal unrest following derogatory remarks made on Facebook during Ramnavami. The subsequent violence led to the imposition of a curfew after widespread property damage.
As the authorities work to control the situation, the community is urged to cooperate and support efforts to restore harmony in the region.
