Despite heightened security measures, incidents of communal provocation were reported in Uttar Pradesh during Holi celebrations, raising concerns over religious harmony.
On March 14, in Sambhal district, individuals allegedly defaced a mosque by spraying colors and inscribing “Jai Shree Ram” on its entrance. The mosque committee filed a complaint at Hayatnagar police station, naming Veeresh, Brajesh, Satish, Harswaroop, Shivom, and Vinod as the culprits. They also accused the group of throwing colors inside the mosque, violating its sanctity, reported the Hindustan Times.
A similar incident occurred in Aligarh, where a Holi procession outside Abdul Karim Masjid attempted to throw colors on the mosque, despite protective tarpaulin coverings. The group reportedly chanted provocative slogans and danced to inflammatory songs, further escalating tensions.
Authorities had taken preemptive steps, including flag marches, drone surveillance, and covering around 100 mosques with tarpaulin to prevent such acts. However, these incidents raise questions about the efficacy of security measures and the continuing challenge of maintaining communal peace.
The attacks have sparked outrage, with calls for strict action against the culprits. The incidents underscore ongoing tensions and the need for stronger measures to prevent communal disturbances.
