Amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters’ verification/electoral rolls exercise across 12 states and union territories, the Congress party on Tuesday came down heavily on BJP accusing the latter of working with “menacing endeavour” to destroy democracy and Opposition parties in the country.
Congress decided to organise a mega rally against the SIR of electoral rolls at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi around the first week of December after the party accomplished the nationwide signature campaign against the ‘Vote-Chori’ charges. The party sources claimed they have collected over five crore signatures from across the country.
A meeting presided over by the party president Mallikarjun Kharge was held at the Congress headquarters ‘Indira Bhavan’ on Tuesday, and attended by All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) in-charge and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief from12 states where the ongoing SIR are being conducted by Election Commission of India.
While citing the Election Commission’s role during the SIR process as enormously disappointing, Kharge reiterated his party’s stand to remain committed to safeguarding the integrity of electoral rolls. He accused the BJP of alleged ‘attempt to weaponise SIR for vote chori’.
A senior Congress leader who attended the meeting informed that the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi conveyed that the party must fight such a move through legal means as well as at political and organisational levels.
