27 Apr. 24: In a decisive move, the Congress party has expelled Amin Khan, the former MLA of Shiv Assembly from Barmer district in Rajasthan, for a period of six years on charges of engaging in anti-party activities.
Amin Khan, who has served as MLA five times and held ministerial positions in the Congress government, faced expulsion following his open opposition to the party’s candidate, Ummedaram Beniwal, in the Barmer Jaisalmer Lok Sabha elections. Khan’s support for independent candidate Ravindra Singh Bhati and his call for voters to favor Bhati over the Congress candidate led to his expulsion.
The roots of this disciplinary action trace back to the assembly elections held in December 2023, where Khan lost to Fateh Khan, an independent candidate, due to internal factionalism within the Congress. Fateh Khan, who was initially suspended from the party for contesting independently, was later reinstated ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, causing dissatisfaction among Khan’s supporters.
Congress candidate Umedaram Beniwal filed a complaint against Amin Khan’s actions, prompting the party’s top leadership to take swift action against him. The expulsion was timed to avoid any potential impact on the Jaisalmer Barmer Lok Sabha elections, which took place on April 26.
With this move, the Congress party aims to maintain discipline and unity within its ranks, emphasizing the consequences of engaging in activities detrimental to the party’s interests.
