Nagaland, June 6: The Congress party has scripted a remarkable comeback story in Nagaland, clinching the lone Lok Sabha seat after a hiatus of two decades. Congress president Supongmeren Jamir’s resounding victory against NDPP’s Dr. Chumben by a substantial margin of 50,984 votes underscores a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
Reflecting on the triumph, Returning Officer Sushil Kumar Patel highlighted the impressive performance of Jamir, who garnered a total of 401,951 votes, surpassing his closest rival Dr. Chumben’s 350,967 votes. Independent candidate Hayithing Tungoe and the NOTA option also made their presence felt, receiving 6,232 votes and 1,646 votes, respectively.
In his post-victory interaction with the media, Jamir attributed the success to the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a grassroots initiative that allowed the party’s central leadership to connect deeply with the aspirations and concerns of the electorate. He emphasized that the victory symbolizes the electorate’s unwavering quest for change, democracy, equality, and the protection of minority rights.
Jamir pledged to honor the mandate by fulfilling the promises outlined in the party’s manifesto and ensuring justice and progress for all sections of society. His acknowledgment of the electorate’s yearning for inclusive governance resonates strongly in a state known for its diverse cultural tapestry and rich heritage.
This historic victory not only marks the resurgence of the Congress party in Nagaland but also signals renewed hope and optimism among the people for a brighter future. With a clear mandate from the people, Jamir and the Congress party are poised to usher in a new era of development, unity, and prosperity for Nagaland.
