New Delhi: The Congress has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what it described as silence over “horrific atrocities” in Gaza. The party called the Prime Minister’s response an act of “moral cowardice” and a departure from India’s historic support for justice and human rights.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh accused Modi of siding with US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after welcoming Trump’s 20-point plan for Gaza. He said the plan lacks a roadmap for Palestinian statehood and excludes representation for the people of Gaza. “Where is the accountability for the genocide carried out in Gaza over the past twenty months?” Ramesh asked, noting that India had recognized Palestinian statehood as far back as 1988 along with 157 UN member states.
Congress leader Pawan Khera also rejected the plan, calling it a “smokescreen” that ignores decades of Palestinian suffering. He asserted that justice requires the creation of an independent Palestinian state, not temporary arrangements that entrench occupation.
The Congress Working Committee last week passed a resolution condemning what it termed a “genocide” in Gaza. It expressed disappointment at India being reduced to a “silent spectator” instead of upholding its traditional role as a moral voice in global affairs.
In contrast, Prime Minister Modi has welcomed Trump’s plan, describing it as a path for peace and development in West Asia. The proposal includes a temporary governing board for Gaza headed by Trump, with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair among its members.
Congress has pledged to continue demanding that the Modi government take a principled stand in support of Palestinian rights.
