New Delhi: A contempt petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court against the Uttar Pradesh administration and state police for allegedly failing to take necessary steps to prevent the organisation of the ‘Dharam Sansad’ event by Yati Narasinghanand, scheduled to take place from December 17 to 21 at Ghaziabad.
The petitioners argued that the event’s promotional materials, including its website and advertisements, contained hate speech targeting followers of Islam and incited violence against the community.
The contempt petition, filed by former civil servants, activists, and other petitioners, highlighted that the advertisements for the ‘Dharam Sansad’ explicitly included hateful rhetoric against Muslims. Furthermore, it alleged that the UP police and Ghaziabad district administration failed to comply with Supreme Court directives regarding hate speech, reports Live Law.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the petitioners, sought an urgent hearing, emphasising that the event openly called for the extermination of Muslims. He underscored the urgency, as the event was set to commence on Tuesday. In response, a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar instructed Bhushan to email a request for the matter to be listed urgently. Chief Justice Khanna remarked, “I’ll think about it. Please send an email.”
The ‘Dharam Sansad’ is planned to take place at the Shiv-Shakti temple complex in Dasna, Ghaziabad, with Yati Narasinghanand as its organiser.
A previous ‘Dharam Sansad’ held in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, had sparked major controversy due to alleged hate speeches. Criminal proceedings were subsequently initiated against several individuals, including Yati Narasinghanand, in connection with that event.
