New Delhi : In connection with controversial remarks made on social media regarding the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, 28 individuals have been arrested from seven Indian states. Those arrested include an opposition MLA from Assam, a journalist, a lawyer, two retired teachers, and 23 students, reported the Roznamakhabrein.
The arrests were made across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura. Assam recorded the highest number of arrests with 16 people detained.
The first arrest took place on April 24, when Assam MLA Aminul Islam from the opposition party AIUDF was taken into custody for allegedly making a provocative remark comparing the April 2 Pahalgam attack with the 2019 Pulwama incident. He has been booked for sedition and was sent to four-day police custody.
In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on April 25, a guest lecturer named Naseem Bano was arrested for allegedly sharing a controversial video related to the Pahalgam attack on WhatsApp. The lecturer claimed she was not the one who created the video, but the ABVP demanded strict action.
In Assam, further arrests included a journalist, a student, and a lawyer on April 25 for allegedly posting anti-government and anti-national content.
Tripura reported four arrests, including two retired teachers. One arrest each was made in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh, while one person was arrested in Meghalaya as well.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned that the National Security Act (NSA) may be invoked if necessary. He emphasized that all social media activity is under scrutiny, and anyone found posting anti-national content will face legal action. “India and Pakistan are not alike. They are enemies and must remain so,” he stated.
