Cow Slaughter Sparks Protests in Aligarh, Police Officer Suspended

Aligarh: A Station House Officer (SHO) in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district was suspended following a cow slaughter incident near Bidhan Nagar village, which led to protests and a two-hour blockade of National Highway 91.

As per a report by The Print, the incident occurred on Wednesday and quickly escalated as a large group of demonstrators gathered, demanding strict action against the perpetrators. Protesters highlighted that this was the second such incident in the Gabhana area within two days, fuelling tensions in the region.

Senior police officials, including Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjiv Suman, intervened to pacify the crowd and successfully restored normalcy on the highway. Speaking to the media, SSP Suman assured that stringent action would be taken against those involved in the crime.

“An FIR has been registered, and the culprits will face strict legal action,” SSP Suman stated. He further emphasised that disciplinary measures would be initiated against any police personnel found negligent. Consequently, Gabhana SHO Gajendra Singh was suspended for lapses in duty.

The SSP also outlined the police’s ongoing efforts to curb such crimes, revealing that nine cow slaughter cases had been reported in the district over the past year. “In all cases, the accused were arrested, booked under the Gangsters Act, and their properties attached,” he said.

The incident underscores ongoing challenges in addressing sensitive issues and maintaining communal harmony in the region.
