New Delhi: The Communist Party of India Marxist criticized the Union government over its response to the reported United States and Israeli attack on Iran. The party described the Centre’s approach as a deplorable attitude which weakens India’s independent foreign policy tradition.
In a statement issued on Friday, the CPI(M) said the government maintained silence while the United States Israel alliance launched military action against Iran. The party stated that such silence undermines India’s historic position of non alignment and independent diplomacy.
The statement also referred to a naval incident in the Indian Ocean involving the Iranian vessel IRIS Dena. The CPI(M) claimed the ship sank after torpedoes fired from a United States submarine. According to the party, the vessel returned from a joint naval exercise in Visakhapatnam when the incident occurred. The party alleged that India failed to provide security cover during the vessel’s departure.
The statement further noted that Sri Lanka rescued 208 crew members from another Iranian ship, IRIS Bushehr. Authorities provided safe berthing at the port city of Trincomalee under international maritime law. The CPI(M) said this response highlighted India’s declining leadership role in the region.
The party also raised concern over Iran’s reported closure of the Strait of Hormuz. It warned that disruption in this vital route for oil shipments could affect India’s energy supplies.
CPI(M) urged the government to press for an immediate halt to hostilities. It also called for urgent measures to protect nearly one crore Indian migrant workers living across West Asia.
