Row Over Removal of Mangalsutras During CTET Exam Sparks Protest in Sambhajinagar

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A controversy has erupted in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar after candidates appearing for the Central Teacher Eligibility Test were allegedly asked to remove jewellery, including mangalsutras, during security checks at examination centres.

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti objected to the move and staged a protest outside the district collectorate on Tuesday. The organisation claimed the action hurt religious sentiments and humiliated Hindu women. Members submitted a memorandum to the district administration and demanded registration of FIRs against officials deployed at the centres.

The issue first surfaced on Sunday when Shiv Sena leader Ambadas Danve raised questions over the incident and sought accountability from the BJP led government. According to the representation submitted by the outfit, women were asked to remove jewellery as part of standard security procedures during the national level examination.

HJS coordinator Priyanka Lone addressed protesters and alleged administrative high handedness. She said touching the mangalsutra under the pretext of security checks showed disrespect towards faith. She cited Article 25 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion, and alleged discrimination.

Protesters also expressed concern over safety. They claimed women had to leave expensive jewellery outside examination halls in the open.

The organisation demanded immediate suspension of the centre in charge and concerned staff. It also called for a clear circular permitting religious ornaments such as mangalsutras, toe rings, nose rings and bindis during exams. The group warned of intensified agitation if similar incidents occur again.
