Dhubri, Assam – Authorities in Dhubri town of Assam have imposed curfew and suspended internet services following communal unrest that erupted after suspected cow remains were discovered near a Hindu temple on Sunday morning.
According to a report by India Today NE, the incident occurred around 7:30 am when a local resident found what appeared to be the head of a cow near the Hanuman temple in Ward Number 3. The discovery quickly triggered protests by 9:00 am, leading to road blockades, tyre burnings, and slogans by agitated residents.
This marks the third such incident at the same location, adding to local frustrations and suspicions. Protesters demanded immediate identification and arrest of the culprits and resisted police attempts to remove the animal remains, insisting they remain untouched until justice is served.
Despite heavy police deployment, tensions continued to rise. By 11:00 am, Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath and Superintendent of Police Nabin Singh reached the site and appealed for calm. The officials assured the crowd that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
In response to the situation, the district administration invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, prohibiting the assembly of five or more individuals in public spaces within Dhubri town. An official order also mandated the closure of all shops and commercial establishments in the area until further notice.
The order explicitly bans all forms of rallies, processions, meetings, and demonstrations. However, exceptions have been made for emergency and essential services, including medical institutions, fire and rescue services, police, military, and utility workers.
The situation remains tense, with authorities urging citizens to maintain peace and cooperate with the ongoing inquiry.
