Muslim-Owned Shops Burned During Durga Puja Procession in Cuttack

Cuttack: Several Muslim-owned shops were set on fire during a Durga Puja procession in the Choudhury Bazaar area of Cuttack, Odisha. Witnesses said the violence broke out suddenly when masked individuals entered the market and began attacking shops. Traders reported that only Muslim establishments were targeted in the assault.

One shopkeeper said they were watching the procession peacefully when the attackers arrived and vandalized their stores. The victims lost goods and property worth several lakhs, adding that this period is crucial for their business due to the festive season.

Local police confirmed multiple shops were damaged and said an investigation is underway. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved. No arrests have been made so far. Authorities have not confirmed whether the violence was planned or spontaneous.

The incident has caused deep anxiety among Muslim traders in Cuttack, who are demanding protection and compensation. Community leaders urged the administration to act swiftly and ensure such targeting does not recur.

Cuttack’s Choudhury Bazaar, known for its mix of Hindu and Muslim traders, has long symbolized peaceful coexistence. The attack during a religious procession has raised concerns over rising communal tensions and the need for preventive measures during large gatherings. Civil society groups have called for stronger crowd management and impartial enforcement of law and order during festivals.
