Dalit Family’s Conversion to Islam Sparks Tension in Haryana’s Nuh District

Nuh (Haryana) – A Dalit family’s decision to embrace Islam has triggered tension in Marora village of Nuh district, with Hindu organisations staging protests and police registering a case, as per a report by the Siasat.

Chetram, a local mason who has now taken the name Mohammed Ikram, converted to Islam along with his wife Rekha (now Rukhsa) and their three children. The family also adopted new Islamic names after the conversion.

In his affidavit, Ikram stated that he was deeply influenced by the “goodness of Islam” and accepted the faith “voluntarily, without any fear or greed.” His wife Rukhsa stood by the same statement during their court appearance in Nuh. “Nobody forced us. We will remain in it,” the couple told the magistrate.

However, Ikram’s brother, Satbi, filed a complaint at Nagina police station, accusing two men—Shahid and Sirajuddin—of coercing the family to change their religion. Based on his complaint, an FIR was lodged.

Despite multiple video recordings showing the family declaring that the conversion was their own choice, protests erupted outside the police station. Hindu groups alleged a “systematic conversion” of Hindus in the region.

Local leaders convened a panchayat, warning that large-scale agitations would be organised if authorities failed to act. A memorandum has also been submitted to the state government, with calls for a district-wide Mahapanchayat if the demands are ignored.

The police confirmed that the family has since gone into hiding, citing threats following their public declaration of faith. The matter has heightened communal sensitivity in the area, which already has a Muslim-majority population of around 6,000 with only about 15 Scheduled Caste Hindu families.
