Dalit Youth Tied to Tree and Brutally Beaten in Rajasthan’s Barmer

Barmer: A deeply disturbing case of caste-based violence has emerged from Rajasthan’s Barmer district, where a Dalit youth named Shrawan Meghwal was tied upside down from a tree and savagely beaten by a group of locals. The incident occurred on January 10 in the Gudamalani police station area, reportedly over accusations of bike theft, reports the Hindustan Times.

A video of the assault, showing Meghwal crying and pleading for mercy, has gone viral on social media, igniting outrage and condemnation across the nation. The visuals have prompted widespread calls for justice and immediate action against those responsible.

Barmer Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Singh Meena stated that Meghwal had previously been arrested on charges of bike theft and was later released on bail. The attack followed renewed allegations against him. “An investigation is underway,” Meena confirmed.

Station House Officer (SHO) Mukta Pareek said that a case has been filed against five to six individuals based on Meghwal’s complaint. Authorities are working to ensure that those involved are held accountable.

The incident has sparked a national outcry, with activists, social organisations, and concerned citizens condemning the act and demanding justice. The brutal assault underscores the ongoing plight of marginalised communities in India and highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms to address caste-based discrimination and violence.

This case has become a rallying point for Dalit rights activists, who are pressing for swift action to prevent such atrocities and uphold the dignity of vulnerable communities.
