Kolkata, Feb. 7: In Murshidabad a girl filed a police complaint against her father, complaining that he prevented her from pursuing higher education and didn’t allow her to appear in higher secondary examination.
Tahrima Khatoon, a student of Imamnagar High School, lodged a police complaint against her father for stopping her from appearing in the higher secondary examination. She was going to Arjunpur High School in Farakka to appear for higher secondary examination but her father stopped her. After the commencement of the examination, the student’s mother complained that her husband Rafiqul Shaikh is not allowing her daughter to appear in the higher secondary examination.
Not only the police officers but also the people of the area are surprised at the daughter’s complaint against the father for education.
Murshidabad, with a majority of Muslims, is the most backward area in the country. The Sachar Committee highlighted the backwardness of Murshidabad.
According to the father, they work as laborers. It is difficult for them to bear the cost of their children’s education, so they prevent their daughter from getting higher education. The slogan of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao is raised by the government, but no practical steps are taken on the condition of daughters.
Khatoon’s aspiration for higher education and her father’s helplessness raise similar questions about how poor parents can fulfill their children’s dream of higher education. It can be said that with such slogans, the government wraps up its rhetoric but stays away from practical measures.
However, Khatoon was taken to the examination hall with the help of the police.
