Hyderabad: Deccan College of Medical Sciences (DCMS), established by former Hyderabad MP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader late Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, turned 40.
The premier institution dedicated to medical education and healthcare, particularly for minorities, celebrated the occasion with Quadrigenia 2025, a four-day programme, which brought together distinguished alumni of the college.
Addressing the concluding session of the event, sitting Hyderabad MP and AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi said Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi established the educational institutions through political power.
He said as the people of Hyderabad strengthened the hands of AIMIM with their votes, Salahuddin Owaisi took the initiative to establish educational institutions for a bright future for the community.
The MP recalled the efforts of the late leader in using political power to get the approval for institutions to ensure the educational development of Muslims. “Salar-e-Millat took concrete steps to bring a revolution among Muslims through knowledge and to educationally empower them,” he said.
In 1984 when N. Bhaskar Rao became chief minister of united Andhra Pradesh for a brief period by toppling the government of N.T. Rama Rao, AIMIM supported Bhaskar Rao and in return for this support, it secured the permission for a medical and engineering college.
Asaduddin Owaisi said when Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi secured permission for the professional colleges, he was ridiculed and criticised by his political rivals. A group of elites even told Salahuddin Owaisi that since he was not well-educated, he should allow them to run these institutions.
He recalled Salahuddin Owaisi’s determination and struggle to overcome challenges to build the institutions. He said Salahuddin Owaisi and others who were part of Darussalam Educational Trust were not academicians or physicians but they had good intentions to serve the community.
Asaduddin Owaisi said they did not bother about the conspiracies and allegations and continued their work to achieve the goal. He made it clear that these institutions are not the assets of Owaisi family and claimed that they are working sincerely.
He was happy to note that more than 5,000 doctors have so far passed out from Deccan College of Medical Sciences. The alumni from this college rendered their services in natural calamities and other emergencies. Some of these doctors rushed medical aid to Gaza and some others served in Bangladesh. More than 600 alumni doctors are associated with alumni organisation in North America.
Asaduddin Owaisi urged alumni doctors and engineers to give their suggestions to further strengthen the institutions.
AIMIM floor leader in Telangana Assembly and Managing Director of Deccan College of Medical Sciences Akbaruddin Owaisi also addressed the event.
Deccan College of Medical Sciences was inaugurated on January 26, 1985, by Mohammad Al Hussaini, Sajjada Nasheen of Khwaja Bande Nawaz Dargah. It expanded further with the inauguration of Owaisi Hospital and Research Centre in 1996 by popular actor Dilip Kumar and Prince Muffakham Jah Bahadur.
The institution diversified into allied fields by establishing the Deccan School of Hospital Management, Owaisi School and College of Nursing (B.Sc and M.Sc), Deccan School of Pharmacy, and Deccan College of Physiotherapy.
