Delhi Court Orders Further Probe Against BJP Leader Kapil Mishra in 2020 Riots Case

A Delhi court has instructed the police to conduct a further investigation against BJP leader and Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra regarding the 2020 northeast Delhi riots. The order follows a complaint by Mohd. Ilyas, who alleged Mishra’s involvement in inciting violence.
Presiding over the case, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia stated that the complaint contained credible allegations and warranted deeper scrutiny. According to Ilyas, on February 23, 2020, Mishra and his associates blocked roads and vandalized carts belonging to Muslim street vendors. He further claimed that Mishra, alongside police officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast), threatened protesters to disperse or face consequences.
Ilyas demanded an FIR against Mishra, then SHO of Dayalpur police station, and five others, including BJP MLA Mohan Singh Bisht and former MLAs Jagdish Pradhan and Satpal Sansad. The Delhi Police opposed the plea, asserting that it was part of a conspiracy to frame Mishra and that he had no role in the riots. However, the court found that evidence suggested Mishra’s presence in the area and deemed the allegations worthy of further investigation.
The court also raised concerns over Mishra’s remarks that reportedly created a division between communities. Additionally, the court directed an inquiry into DCP Ved Prakash Surya, who was allegedly seen warning protesters of severe consequences if they did not vacate.
This development underscores the ongoing political and communal sensitivities surrounding the 2020 Delhi riots, as the case continues to unfold.
