A Delhi court’s decision to allow the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to close the long-pending case of missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed has sparked deep disappointment among his family, friends, and rights activists. The court accepted the CBI’s closure report, which claimed no evidence was found to trace Ahmed’s whereabouts or identify those responsible for his disappearance, as per a report by the Madhyamam.
Najeeb Ahmed, a student at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), went missing on October 15, 2016, just a day after a reported confrontation with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student wing of the RSS. His sudden disappearance triggered widespread protests across the country, with students, activists, and political figures demanding a thorough and transparent investigation.
The Delhi Police initially investigated the case, but it was later handed over to the CBI in May 2017 after public pressure and a Delhi High Court directive. Despite years of inquiry, the CBI claimed that all possible leads were exhausted and no concrete evidence could be found—leading them to file a closure report, now accepted by the court.
