New Delhi, July 25: The Delhi High Court has requested the city police’s response regarding the bail plea of former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid, who is implicated in a UAPA case related to the alleged conspiracy behind the February 2020 riots, reported the Times of India.
A bench comprising Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Girish Kathpalia issued a notice to the Delhi Police, directing them to submit a reply. The court scheduled the hearing of Khalid’s bail plea for August 29, coinciding with the bail pleas of other co-accused, including student activist Sharjeel Imam.
Arrested in September 2020, Khalid is challenging a recent trial court order that denied him bail. Khalid, Imam, and several others are charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly orchestrating the riots, which resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The trial court, on May 28, dismissed Khalid’s second bail application, noting that its previous order rejecting his first bail plea had attained finality.
