Delhi High Court Grants Bail to Sharjeel Imam in 2020 Delhi Riots Case

29 May 2024: The Delhi High Court has granted bail to Sharjeel Imam in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case, which involved allegations of sedition. The news was reported by PTI.

Imam was originally booked by Delhi Police’s Special Branch on charges of sedition, with Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) being invoked later. He has been in custody since January 28, 2020.

A Division Bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain granted statutory bail to Imam, as reported by Bar and Bench. Despite this bail, Imam will remain in jail due to other charges related to the Delhi riots conspiracy case.

The prosecution alleges that Imam delivered inflammatory speeches at Jamia Millia Islamia on December 13, 2019, and at Aligarh Muslim University on December 16, 2019, where he allegedly threatened to cut off Assam and the rest of the North East from the country.
