New Delhi – The Delhi Police have opposed a plea seeking an FIR against BJP leader Kapil Mishra in connection with the February 2020 northeast Delhi riots, which resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries.
The plea, filed by Yamuna Vihar resident Mohammad Ilyas in December 2024, sought action against six individuals, including Mishra, Mustafabad MLA and Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, the then DCP (North East), the then Dayalpur SHO, and former BJP legislator Jagdish Pradhan.
Ilyas alleged that on February 23, 2020, he witnessed Mishra and others blocking roads in Kardampuri and destroying street vendors’ handcarts. He also claimed that the then DCP stood beside Mishra as he threatened anti-CAA protesters, while police officers vandalized mosques across northeast Delhi.
In response, Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad told the court that Mishra’s role had already been examined in the larger conspiracy case, which includes former JNU student leader Umar Khalid and others booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and no evidence was found against him.
The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Vaibhav Chaurasia, will pronounce the court’s decision on March 24.
